Post 16: Persistent Contrails and Operation Weather — A 2001 Timeline Investigation

What this means: Contrails aren’t just visible pollution. They have measurable climate effects. If you wanted to engineer the atmosphere deliberately, contrails would be an effective tool.

The Technical Capability: Military Fuel Additives

Military aircraft use JP-8 jet fuel, which is commercial Jet A-1 fuel plus three additional chemical additives:

  • To control ice formation
  • To control biogrowth (molds/slimes)
  • To inhibit corrosion
  • Why does military fuel need additives to “control ice formation”? Because ice formation affects engine performance and fuel tank viability in military environments. But research has shown that fuel composition and soot particle properties directly affect contrail formation and persistence.

    The Wartime Acceleration: Operation Enduring Freedom

    October 7, 2001: Operation Enduring Freedom began—exactly when you observed contrails changing.

    Between October 7, 2001 and late February 2002, tanker aircraft flew nearly 5,000 refueling sorties over Afghanistan. An additional 5,000 tanker sorties were flown over the continental U.S. to refuel fighters. KC-10 and KC-135 tankers were concentrated in sustained orbits (circular flight patterns) over southwestern Pakistan and other strategic regions.
