# TEACHING OTHERS TO THINK CRITICALLY
## Guide for Facilitators

**By Becoming Real**

You don’t need to be an expert to teach critical thinking.

You just need to ask hard questions.

## THE FACILITATOR’S JOB

Not to tell people what to think.

But to help them examine their thinking.

## STEP 1: CREATE SAFETY

**Let them know:**
– There’s no “right” answer
– Examining beliefs is uncomfortable
– You’re doing this together
– Changing your mind is wisdom, not failure

## STEP 2: ASK FOR A BELIEF

**”What’s something you’re confident about?”**

Have them name it specifically.

Not: “Success is important”
But: “If you work hard, you’ll be successful”

## STEP 3: ASK THE FIVE LAYERS

**Layer 1 – Origin:**
“How did you decide this was true?”

**Layer 2 – Consistency:**
“Do you apply this belief the same way every time?”

**Layer 3 – Knowledge:**
“What don’t you actually understand about this belief?”

**Layer 4 – Emotion:**
“How does believing this make you feel?”

**Layer 5 – Defense:**
“Could you defend this if no one agreed with you?”

## STEP 4: DON’T ACCEPT QUICK ANSWERS

**When they say:** “I don’t know”
**Ask:** “What would you need to know?”

**When they defend:** “That’s just how it is”
**Ask:** “But why do YOU believe it?”

**When they retreat:** “I guess I was wrong”
**Ask:** “Or did you just discover it’s more complicated?”

## STEP 5: HOLD THE TENSION

Critical thinking is uncomfortable.

Sit with their discomfort.

Don’t rush to resolution.

The value is in the examination, not the conclusion.

## STEP 6: FIND THE LOVE OR FEAR

**Ask:**
“Is this belief rooted in something you love?
Or something you’re afraid of?”

This is where real transformation happens.

## COMMON MISTAKES

**Don’t:**
– Give your opinion
– Try to convince them
– Accept surface answers
– Move too fast
– Make it about being right

**Do:**
– Ask genuine questions
– Listen to their full answer
– Follow up with deeper questions
– Give them time to think
– Make it about actual thinking

## THE GOAL

Not consensus.

Not agreement.

But genuine examination of what we believe and why.
