TEACHING YOUR KIDS CRITICAL THINKING – Age-Appropriate Guide

# TEACHING YOUR KIDS CRITICAL THINKING
## Age-Appropriate Guide for Parents

**By Becoming Real**

## AGES 5-7: THE QUESTIONING PHASE

**What they understand:**
Why questions. Simple cause and effect.

**How to teach:**
Ask them:
– “Why do you like that?”
– “How did you decide that?”
– “What would happen if…?”

Let them explore possibilities.

Model genuine curiosity.

## AGES 8-11: THE LOGIC PHASE

**What they understand:**
Rules, consistency, fairness.

**How to teach:**
Point out contradictions:
– “You said X, but you did Y. How does that work?”
– “You’re okay when your sister does it but not when your brother does. Why the difference?”

Teach them to notice inconsistency.

## AGES 12-15: THE IDENTITY PHASE

**What they understand:**
Who they are. What matters to them.

**How to teach:**
Ask:
– “What do you actually believe about this?”
– “Why do you believe it?”
– “Could you be wrong?”
– “What would change your mind?”

Help them find their own thinking.

## ALL AGES: CORE PRINCIPLES

✓ Ask genuine questions (you’re curious, not testing)

✓ Listen to their full answers

✓ Don’t immediately correct them

✓ Help them notice their own contradictions

✓ Celebrate when they change their minds

✓ Model admitting “I don’t know”

✓ Never shame confusion

## THE GOAL

Not to teach them what to think.

But to teach them HOW to think.

To help them examine their own foundations.

To teach them that genuine curiosity is a strength.

**Start today. Ask your kids real questions. Watch them think.**
