The Five Layers framework is now available as an interactive tool you can use right here.
What it does: This tool walks you through five layers of examining any belief you hold. Not to judge it or dismiss it, but to understand where it came from, whether you actually live by it, where it breaks down, and what emotion it protects you from.
Then it asks the final question: Is this rooted in love or fear?
How to use it
- Pick a belief you want to examine. Something you’ve been assuming about yourself, your life, or what’s possible.
- Work through each of the five layers. Click to expand and read the description and example.
- Answer the final question honestly.
- Read the result. It will tell you what to do next.
Take your time. The tool works best when you’re specific and honest about your answers.
The Five Layers explained
Layer 1: Origin — Where did this belief come from? Who taught it to you? What experience made you believe this?
Layer 2: Consistency — Do you actually live by this belief? Find evidence for it AND against it. Look for contradictions between what you believe and what you do.
Layer 3: Gaps — Where does this belief break down? What are the exceptions? What do you do that contradicts this belief?
Layer 4: Emotion — What does this belief protect you from? What would happen if you didn’t believe it? What feeling does it keep you safe from?
Layer 5: Solo Test — If you were completely alone, with no possibility of judgment or consequence, would you still believe this? The answer tells you if the belief is about your actual capability or about other people’s judgment.
The final question
After working through all five layers, the tool asks: Is this rooted in love or fear?
Love means: doing something because it matters, because you care, because it’s connected to what you actually want.
Fear means: doing something to protect yourself from pain, to stay safe, to avoid risk.
Your answer points you toward what to do next.
